Legend, scoundrel and master of his domain. The Cult of Xane is an affectionate tribute to Xane St. Phillip, artist, lecturer and colourist at the Vancouver Island School of Art. Relaying the genius and wisdom of Johannes Itten’s colour strategies, he inspires many who attend his classes in design and colour theory.
The series employs some of these techniques using a thick unctuous acrylic application of multiple layers, whilst also infusing abstract qualities and amorphous shapes into the work. Clarity and simplicity, the work of Matisse and the rigor of geometric abstract painting are all concepts passionately promoted by Xane. The pieces are influenced by these ideas and marked my return to the (mainly) sheer pleasure and happiness of large scale abstract painting.
